The Emir of Gummi in Zamfara, Justice Lawal Hassan, says he has introduced a special skills acquisition scheme for Fulani herdsmen from the emirate.

The traditional ruler made this known on Sunday during the graduation ceremony of 50 men and women who participated in a three months skills acquisition programme in Gummi.

The scheme is being handled by Andi Foundation, a youth and women empowerment scheme, introduced and sponsored by the emir.

Hassan said the training programme was to cater for herdsmen, many of whom had lost their cattle to rustlers.

“The absence of their livestock has forced them to be redundant and also made them to engage in criminal activities, such as attack on innocent people and kidnapping, among others.

“We believe this programme will assist them to have something doing and stay away from criminal activities.

“We are going to meet with their leaders over the matter and discuss which area to start the project, even if it means buying cattle for them to continue with their normal lives.

“We will do that in order to ensure peace and security in our area,” he said.
He added that the foundation would soon come out with the breakdown of the programme and the take-off date.

He said the 50 participants who graduated on Sunday comprised 30 male and 20 female.
According to him, the men were trained on welding, plumbing/borehole maintenance, shoe making and domestic electrification, while the female participants were trained on tailoring, knitting and fashion design, among others.

He stated that another set of 50 persons would soon commence training and they would be joined by the Fulani herdsmen.

The Chairman of the State Council of Chiefs and Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmed, commended Hassan for the initiative.

Ahmed called on the participants to use what they had learnt to improve their wellbeing.

He appealed to well-to-do individuals in the state to emulate the emir.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muttaka Rini, described the foundation as a welcome development.

He said the foundation would complement the efforts of the present administration in the state and at the federal level in providing employment for Nigerian youths. (NAN)
