Mild drama unfolded on Wednesday, February 17, at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos following the death of a middle-aged female passenger billed to travel to Abu Dhabi, United Arabs Emirates, on Etihad Airways.
The cause of her demise remains unclear, however, it was learnt that the deceased, whose identity was not revealed, was travelling for medical treatment abroad and suffered a bout of pains which compelled her rush to the toilet where she died.
Confirming the tragedy, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Yakubu Dati, who said the corpse was discovered at about 6.30am, added that the agency was investigating the death and would give details of what happened later.
According to him, the remains of the deceased had been taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for autopsy.
The FAAN spokesman said, “We will not reveal the identity of the deceased for now. Presently, we are working to inform the relatives of the passenger. We will still obtain the autopsy report and observe certain procedure. It is when we have done all these that the identity of the dead passenger will be made public.”
Similar deaths have been recorded at the airport where sick passengers travelling abroad for treatment passed on before boarding the aircraft.
In 2015, the British deputy high commissioner, who was believed to have suffered a heart attack while disembarking from his flight, collapsed and died on arrival from the United States at the airport.
