Trouble in Benue south ahead of Saturday’s run

From ROSE EJEMBI, Makurdi.

All seem not to be well ahead of the Benue South Senatorial rerun elections this saturday as police yesterday confirmed the shooting of Otukpo council Chairman, Ijache Ude and three others by gunmen.

Trouble was said to have started in Ondo community of Ugboju, Otukpo Local government area Tuesday following a disagreement between the caretaker chairman of the local government, Ijachi Ude and his younger brother Eje Ude who are members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) respectively.

Although, our correspondent gathered that three persons including Okwoche Omale, Andrew Adaji and Audu Okpachu Okopi were killed in the crisis, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Moses Yamu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) denied that anyone was killed.

Yamu who noted that the council chairman who sustained gunshot injury was still on admission at the hospital however disclosed that his police orderly and the two other persons who were also injured in the crisis had been discharged.

He disclosed further that some persons had been arrested in connection with the crisis and would soon be charged to court after investigation is completed adding that security operatives had been drafted to the trouble area to maintain law and order.

Recall that only a few days ago, the residence of the former senate president and his family were allegedly attacked by gunmen suspected to be security agents on the entourage of the state deputy governor, Engineer Benson Abounu, a development which his Press Secretary, Ede Ogaba dispelled as unfounded rumour.
