The gale of rejection of budgets in the House of Representatives continued yesterday as the Committee on Works cancelled the budget defence session of the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGOF) due to conflicting documents.
The Toby Okechukwu led committee faulted the 2016 budget estimates of the OSGOF on the grounds that it was not in tandem with what President Muhammadu Buhari had presented before the National Assembly.
Director General of OSGOF, Ebisintei Awudu who told the lawmakers that the budget he was defending was what his office obtained from the Senate and faulted the budget office for the discrepancies. He maintained that the budget it prepared was based on the templates given.
Awudu noted that during the office’s appearance before the Senate Committee on Works, they were turned down because the committee observed that road construction was contained in its budget which was not supposed to be.
“At the budget office there is a template and software given to us, in our documents before the Senate there was the construction of roads for N200 million and we know nothing about that. We are not here to cause confusion, we only removed what was not ours,” he stressed.
On its Internally Generated Revenue IGR, the OSGOF said it remitted N1.6 million into the Federation Account.
Commenting on that, Hon. Okechukwu said the amount is reasonable but urged them to do more.
“There has to be some level of creativity, our expectation is that you need to be up and doing,” he said.
Hon. Okechukwu then directed the OSGOF to go and correct the discrepancies in its budget and will be given a later date to come and defend it.
A break down of the 2016 budget of the OSGOF shows that Overhead cost is N139million, Personnel cost stands at N867.5 million while N1 billion is for capital projects.
