The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Command Lagos has seized a service pistol and 980 rounds of live ammunition concealed in two cars that were loaded in a 40ft container.
Other items seized include: Army camouflage face cap, belt, hand gloves, Army colour plastic container and a pair of military shoes.
The Customs Area Controller of the command, Yusuf Bashar who disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos yesterday said the seizure was made on December 30, 2015, noting that it was not made public as investigations were ongoing.
According to him, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the smuggled items which originated from the United States of America.
While handing over the seized military hardware to the Director of the State Security Service (SSS) at Tin Can Island Port, James Udo, Bashar said: “It’s very essential to ensure such prohibited items do not come into the country in view of the prevailing security challenges. They came in a container which number CLHU452754/2. They were concealed along two cars and other personal effect. They’re highly prohibited items and can only be imported via the military. The pistol was concealed in a packet. Movements of arms and ammunition is worldwide has rules and procedures. It’s not allowed on individual basis. You must get licenses, authorization etc before you can move such across the borders. Whoever conceals any prohibited item, has committed a crime. The Customs web portal is accessible to everyone across the world to know to import and how to import it. There you have list of items that are clearly marked absolute prohibition. The gun and live ammunition falls under that”, he explained.
Also speaking at the briefing, James Udo, the Director of SSS, Tin Can Island Port described the seizure as commending, even as he said that security is everybody’s business. “Customs, Immigrations, the Police and all other government agencies are working closely to sanitize the country.
“A lot of terrible things are happening with regards to gun robberies etc. We want the country to be safe. In SSS, detection, investigation and prevention of anything that will hurt the nation’s security apparatus is our business. We’re mandated to maintain the security of the country”, he added.
